AITuber’s guide to the AI rap duo video trend.

An AI rap duo video shows two characters trading verses on one beat, made with AI instead of a camera. One raps a line, the other answers, and the pair keeps swapping until the hook. The format blew up on TikTok in September 2026 through the “Hotel Lobby” meme, where people put two new faces on an old rap performance.

The meme is a face swap of two real rappers. We think the better long-term play is an original duo: two characters you invent, rapping a track you own. That is what the rest of this guide shows you how to build.

Key takeaways

Where the trend came from

The source clip is older than the trend. In 2022, Quavo and Takeoff of Migos performed their song “Hotel Lobby” as Unc & Phew on A COLORS SHOW. The two stand side by side against the show’s plain orange wall and pass the verses back and forth. That clip sat at about 130 million views on the COLORS YouTube channel when we checked.

The AI version took off four years later. Complex reports that it gained traction in early September 2026, after videos of two cats doing the performance went viral. Apps like Starrd and Summrs, plus CapCut templates, let people upload two photos. The app then maps both faces onto the original movements and audio. Complex says hundreds of thousands of versions are now online, with pets, film characters, couples, and sports stars in the two spots.

Quavo noticed. On 23 September 2026 he reposted the untouched COLORS clip and called it the original. Not every fan liked the meme, though. Takeoff was shot and killed in 2022, and some fans told Complex it felt wrong to turn his likeness into a joke. Others raised the same worry many face-swap apps get: what happens to the photos people upload.

We searched YouTube for the AI remakes too. The Shorts we found ranged from about 22,000 to 357,000 views each, with no single clip close to the original. View counts are as of 14 October 2026.

Why two rappers beat one

A solo rap video has one thing to watch. A duo has a relationship, and that is far more fun to follow.

The swap is the engine. Every time the second voice comes in, the picture has a reason to change, so the cuts feel earned. Your ear also starts to predict the next handoff, and that little guess keeps people watching to the end.

Contrast does the rest. The best remakes pair two characters who should never rap together, like a cat and a dog or a tiny kid and a grandad. The bigger the gap in size, age, or mood, the funnier each line lands. That gap is also why we’d never make the two look alike. If a viewer can’t tell them apart in one glance, the back and forth falls flat.

How to make an original AI rap duo

You need three things: a track with two voices, two characters who look nothing alike, and a plan for who is on screen during each line. We cover the full build in our guide on how to make an AI rap video. The duo version changes only a few steps.

  1. Get a two-voice track. The easy route is your own recording, or a track from a friend, uploaded as an MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, or OGG file. You can also describe the song in the song box of an AI rap video generator. Try a line like “two rappers trading lines, one deep voice and one bright voice”. We haven’t tested how often the music model splits the parts cleanly, so listen before you build the visuals.
  2. Write two characters with one big difference each. Give them different colours, sizes, and outfits. “A tall bear in a red cap” and “a tiny fox in a blue hoodie” will stay apart better than “two friends”.
  3. Pick your framing. In a side by side shot, both rappers share the frame the whole time, like the original. In a cut, the picture swaps to whoever has the line. Cuts are easier for AI pictures, because each image only has to draw one character. We’d start there.
  4. Generate, then check the faces. AI image models drift, and two characters in one frame can blend into one. If that happens, go back to cuts, or push the colours further apart.
  5. Turn on the lyric captions. Two voices are harder to follow than one, and captions timed to each word show viewers whose line it is.

If you want two characters talking rather than rapping, the AI talking character video generator is built for that. It gives each character a speaking part, which suits a spoken roast battle better than a song.

Our AI rap video prompts include five duo picture prompts you can paste as they are.

Five rap duo ideas to start with

Each idea pairs two characters with one clear gap between them. Swap in your own pair once one works.

  1. Grandad and grandkid. A grey-haired man in a cardigan and a kid in a huge hoodie argue about whose music is better, verse by verse.
  2. Cat and dog on the sofa. A smug white cat and a nervous brown dog trade lines about who broke the vase.
  3. Coffee and tea. Two talking mugs on a café counter roast each other, one fast and loud, one slow and calm.
  4. Robot and ghost. A boxy silver robot and a small white ghost rap in an empty cinema about being stuck on night shift.
  5. Rival chefs. Two cooks in one tiny kitchen, one in red and one in yellow, trade bars while the orders pile up.

Ideas 3 and 4 work well in 3D cartoon style, which also makes it obvious to viewers that the pair is made up.

A note on rights and labels

Keep real people out of it. A face swap of a real rapper copies a face, a voice, and a performance you don’t own. With Takeoff, it also uses the likeness of someone who has died. An original duo avoids all of that, and you can post it as a series without worrying about a takedown.

Label it as AI where the platform asks. TikTok and YouTube both have a disclosure setting for AI content. A cartoon fox is clearly made up, but realistic people need the label. Our guide to YouTube’s AI labels explains when it applies.

Frequently Asked Questions

The trend

What is an AI rap duo video?

It is a short video where two AI characters trade rap lines on one beat. One raps, the other answers, and they keep swapping.

What is the Hotel Lobby AI trend?

It is a face-swap meme of Quavo and Takeoff’s 2022 “Hotel Lobby” performance on A COLORS SHOW. People upload two photos and an app puts both faces on the original clip. Complex reports it took off on TikTok in early September 2026.

Is there a free AI rap duo maker?

Some face-swap apps and CapCut templates offer free tries, but each sets its own limits, and we didn’t test them. AITuber gives 100 free credits at signup with no card, which covers a first original rap video.

Making one

Can I make a rap duo video without a face swap?

Yes. Invent two characters, describe them in the picture prompt, and use a track with two voices. That is the route we recommend.

How do I keep the two characters from blending together?

Give each one a colour, a size, and an outfit the other lacks. If they still blend, show one rapper per shot instead of both.

How much does an AI rap video cost on AITuber?

Our rap tool page puts a typical AITuber rap video at about 80 to 100 credits, track included. The AITuber Creator plan is $39 a month for 2,500 credits. See the pricing page.

How we researched this: the trend history comes from Complex, published 27 September 2026. View counts are from YouTube search results we read on 14 October 2026. We did not test Starrd, Summrs, or CapCut. The duo ideas and the advice on framing are our own view. The showcase clip is from AITuber’s public catalog, which holds no rap duo clip yet. AITuber is our product.
